You’re Already Doing

the Hard Work.

If you scored 0–3 patterns on the diagnostic, you’re operating with more Maine fluency than most businesses we encounter. That’s not flattery, it’s a real thing, and it’s worth celebrating, because you are ready for some fine tuning.

You’re Already Doing the HardWork. Here’s What Comes Next.

Most businesses who reach this level have built something solid: a brand voice that fits Maine, a strategy grounded in a deep understanding of their customers, and results that show how the pieces are working together. There may be a temptation at this point to assume the work is done. It isn’t. It’s just shifted.

The businesses that go from good in Maine to dominant in Maine tend to share one thing: they stop treating Maine as a single large group, or even as an audience separated by region.

In our Three Maines research, we identified three distinct mindset segments that cut across Maine’s demographics. They don’t map cleanly onto age, geography, or income. They map onto how people relate to the state itself, how they think about its identity, its future, and their place in it.

The largest mindset segment is the one most folks assume represents all of Maine. The other two segments make different decisions, respond to different language, and trust different sources, even when they’re standing in the same store buying the same product.

For a business already doing the harder work, this is where the next gain is. Not refining your existing messaging further, but recognizing that your existing messaging may be working beautifully on one mindset while missing the other two. The data suggests that for many Maine businesses, the segment they’re connecting with strongly is only roughly half of their addressable market, sometimes less.

That’s the opportunity available to readers in this band: not better marketing, but more specific marketing.

If you’d like to stay current on Maine-specific marketing research as it’s released, The Strategy Brief is our biweekly newsletter for Maine business leaders. It translates new findings from the Maine Insights Lab into practical strategy, hopefully without a ton of marketing-speak.
